Saona was recently named at Caribbean Travel & Life’s No. 8 Beaches Resort Site. White beaches such as sugar, tall palm trees and turquoise blue water make it one of the most romantic destinations in the DR.
Saona is the largest of the islands off the coast of the country and also a nature reserve that is part of the Eastern National Park. It has about 102 km2 and represents about a quarter of the total area of the Park. With approximately 22 km wide from east to west and about 7 km from north to south at its widest point, it is separated from the mainland of the Dominican Republic by a narrow channel called Canal Catuano of only 2 km wide. This channel is an ecologically important area, because it is densely populated with mangroves that serve as a nursery for tropical fish, sea turtles and many other invertebrate species.
This tour combines a relaxing cruise on a relaxing catamaran and an exciting ride on high speed boats.
We start our tour with a bus transfer from your hotel to the small fishing village of Bayahibe. Once there we embark on a comfortable catamaran to enjoy a walk along the coast of the National Park East heading to Saona Island. Relax in the sun on the catamaran net or cheer up a sticky merengue. The Saona Island sailing tour has approx. 1.5 hours. You will be surrounded by white sand beaches, turquoise waters and countless palm trees accompanied by a professional crew.
Once on Saona Island you will have time to float and relax in the endless shallow turquoise waters. You will also have time to explore the white sandy beaches of Saona Island that have been used on many occasions by filmmakers and advertisers in search of a stereotype of “desert island” for a movie or product scenario.
A BBQ buffet style lunch will be served on Island’s beach under the shade of the palm trees.
On the return trip from Saona you can enjoy an exciting boat ride very close to the coastline of the National Park. On the way back to mainland we will stop in the “natural pool”, one of the highlights of this fabulous excursion. This is a zone of sandbars that allows you to have the unusual experience of being in shallow and crystal clear waters off the coast.
Enjoy a toast in the middle of the sea and take a dip in this fantastic place of nature. In the “natural pool” there are also many starfish as they love the few deep sand banks. While you are there please respect the 10 second rule! That is, do not keep a starfish out of the water for more than 10 seconds and always remember to put them back into the water!
After arriving in Bayahibe again you will board the bus that will take you back to your hotel.
